The UK Government is planning to introduce new Simpler Recycling regulations reforming waste collections and recycling across England. The new reforms aim to clear up confusion over recyclable and non-recyclable materials, as well as standardise recycling practices across England.

These changes will help transform recycling rates, as well as tackle illegal waste activities.

What are the new recycling requirements and how does it impact you?

Effective from 31st March 2025, under the new Simpler Recycling regulations, businesses with 10 or more full-time equivalent employees are required to separate dry mixed recyclables, glass, and food from their general waste. Businesses with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees have until March 2027 to comply.

Simpler Recycling Timeline

The current proposed timeline for implementation is below:

  • By 31st March 2025 – all businesses and other non-household premises with 10 or more full-time equivalent employees are required to separate plastic, paper and card, glass, metals (cans, tins and foil)* and food waste from their general waste
  • By 31st March 2027 – this will expand to cover businesses with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees and include plastic film, plastic packaging and plastic bags

Gilston Waste Management is gearing up its operations to collect the required separate recycling containers, along with your general waste container and is on hand to help you get prepared for the changes. We will keep you informed as more detail emerges from the UK Government over the coming weeks.
